Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the two most common forms of arthritis affecting the patient’s bone health. With age, the cartilage of the knee joint breaks down or weakens, causing nagging pain or knot-like swelling, due to which performing routine activities become troublesome for the patient. Nowadays, orthopedics advises undergoing knee replacement surgery to help relieve the pain and restore the strength and functionality of the affected joint.

When is the right time to undergo knee replacement?

The orthopedic surgeon will assess the range of motion, strength, and stability of the joint. Some medical examinations are required, including blood tests and X-ray imaging, to determine the extent of the damage.

When the prescribed non-surgical treatment methods fail to respond positively in treating pain & swelling, and the patient suffers from performing routine activities.
In some patients, the doctor observes the formation of knee deformities such as bow-legs or knock-knees.

What happens after Knee replacement Surgery?

The orthopedic surgeon will implant an artificial knee joint using a minimally invasive procedure that is safe and a low-risk surgical procedure. After the surgery, the patient is kept under overnight observation, followed by 2 to 3 days of hospitalization. In most cases, the replacement surgery helps improve mobility and provides pain relief to the patient. During the recovery phase, the patient has to follow physiotherapy sessions to prevent clotting and regain muscle strength. Other physical activities are restricted for a few weeks, but the patient can gradually resume daily activities as per the doctor’s instructions. Pain-reducing medications are part of the treatment plan. Also, vitamin and calcium supplements are prescribed for faster recovery.
You have to make some alterations at home to prevent injury and damage to the new implant, which includes the addition of railings or support handle in the bathroom and staircase, removal of carpets and rugs from the floor, getting a high or elevated chair and toilet seat to maintain the correct posture, and crutches or walker for walking (required only during the recovery period).
