HIP Replacement

Get your Hip Replacement Surgery performed for a better life

Hip replacement surgery is performed to remove or replace damaged hip joints from the artificial ceramic or metal implant. These days, hip replacement is commonly used to treat patients of rheumatoid arthritis experiencing pain and inflammation in the joint. Another major reason behind the immediate surgical intervention can be external injury or sudden hip fracture, also known as traumatic arthritis. After experiencing replacement surgery, the patient is required to follow a post-surgery care plan for a faster recovery.

Why might you need to undergo hip replacement surgery?

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are both degenerative joint diseases that affect the bone health of the patient. People who have arthritis may not be able to perform everyday activities that involve stretching or bending, including walking or sitting. A person having rheumatoid arthritis has more risk of hip fractures than osteoarthritis. In such conditions, the orthopaedic surgeon will perform imaging tests and advise to undergo replacement surgery.

Also, the orthopaedic specialist will observe the effect of the ongoing treatment plan; if they cannot bear the arthritis pain or inflammation, then replacement surgery is the only option left for the pain-relieving treatment.

Types of Hip Replacement Surgeries

1) Total Hip Replacement

In a total hip replacement, the damaged joints or sections of hips are entirely removed and replaced with artificial implants. The socket is replaced with a firmer metal or plastic cup, whereas the femoral head is replaced with a metal ball. These implants are fixed with screws to prevent dislocation or wearing out of the artificial joints causing infection.

2) Partial Hip Replacement

During the partial hip replacement, the surgeon will apply the same replacement technique to replace one side of the joint (femoral head) instead of both sides. The partial replacement surgery is performed for certain conditions such as external injury, fracture, or unforeseen issues.

What to expect after Hip replacement Surgery?

After hip replacement surgery, the patient will be taken to the recovery room for observation. Some patients are admitted for 2 to 3 nights to follow up. At home, the patient needs to have complete bed rest for at least three weeks and is allowed to perform low strength activities such as walking. Pain-relieving medication and supplements are advised to be taken as directed for faster recovery.

The caregiver needs to make arrangements for patients, such as the availability of high-elevated chairs and toilet seats, open and uninterrupted spaces to walk, modifications in the bathroom, handle or railing support in the staircase, and others. After surgery, the patient has to maintain a weekly or monthly check-up plan, as per the physician’s instructions.
