Fracture Specialist in Noida
Excessive pressure placed on a bone will cause a split or break. Any form of breakage or injury that occurs in a bone is called a fracture. In severe cases, a bone can puncture the skin making it prone to infections, the condition is known as open or compound fracture. This requires immediate surgical treatment to prevent complications and infection that may spread to the other parts of the body.
Fracture that is common among sports players or athletes, is a stress fracture that occurs due to repeated or prolonged forces against a particular bone or joint. This repetitive action weakens the bone leading to future tears or splits in joints.
Causes
The following are the most common causes of a fracture:
- Fall from a height
- Trauma or accidents
- Result of a Direct blow
- Major hit on a joint
- Repetitive forces on a particular joint
Symptoms
Each individual may experience symptoms differently which may include:
- Pain & soreness
- Swelling or lump
- Deformity
- Loss of sensation
- Difficulty moving in the injured area
- Inability to lift or bear weight
- Warmth, bruising, or redness
Often the signs of a broken bone may resemble other health conditions, so it is advisable to consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and timely treatment.
Treatment
Normally, we give support to a broken bone with a cast or splint. The role of a cast is to wrap up the fracture with hard protection, while splints are used to offer protection to just one side of the injured area. Both methods are applied after observing and diagnosing the injury to keep the bone immobilized. These supports provide stabilization and straighten it until it grows back together and heals.
In a smaller area of the body such as fingers and toes, it is impossible to tie a cast. In such cases splint is used to wrap the injury to prevent & protect it from outer forces.
In other cases, your doctor may suggest you go for traction. A procedure involving pulleys and weights to stretch the muscles and tendons around the broken bone. Traction is a successful technique to align bones in a correct position while promoting faster healing.
For severe bone breaks, the doctor may recommend undergoing a surgery. Often it happens after a motor vehicle accident, major sports injury or severe damage to the bone. In these conditions, a surgeon may use stainless-steel screws, plates and fixators, or frames that hold the bone steady or replace it with artificial implants.
Rehabilitation
Any fracture takes several weeks to months of rest and care to heal completely. During this phase, it is advisable to limit your physical activities even after the cast or brace is removed. Only slow-paced activity, physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises are performed under the guidance of your doctor and a therapist.
